How to Figure Out What To Do Next in Your Career

Do you want to change jobs but are not sure what you want to do instead? Perhaps you still don’t know “what you want to be when you grow up”?

One thing you can start with (if you haven’t already) is to think about and become aware of what interests you, what you really enjoy and what motivates you.

Try not to focus too much on what kind of job you might want, what salary you would like or what skills you need right now, just focus on what you love and enjoy as a starting point.

Here are some questions that you can ask yourself:

– What do you like to do in your spare time?

– What did you do as a child that you absolutely loved?

– What do you love doing now?

– What feels easy to you and fills you with joy?

– What’s important to you?

✏️ Grab a pen and paper and write down everything you can think of.

📝 You can also write a list of positive and memorable events in your life and career. Ask yourself:

– When were you at your happiest?

– When did you feel filled with joy and pride?

– What made you feel fulfilled?

Hopefully it will give you a clearer idea of what you enjoy doing and help you come up with some great ideas.

📌 Tips for the Next Step:

• Explore a range of possibilities.

• Find a couple of things you want to explore.

• Do some research:
What type of education or training is required? What’s the work environment like? What is the salary, work schedule and dress code etc.?

• Experiment by testing them out.

I found my dream job by giving myself time for self discovery, clarify what I really truly enjoy and by testing things out. I signed up for various small courses that interested me and really gave it an honest chance. Doing a course does not put any pressure on you. I thought that even if it doesn’t lead to my dream career, at least I’ve learned something that I can use later in life – win-win!
